Lavinia Magliocco was born in Topeka KS and trained at North Carolina School of the Arts, School of American Ballet, and at the Academia Nazionale di Danza in Rome, Italy. At 18, her career was derailed by a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. During nine years of severe illness, she received her BA from University of Cincinnati in English Literature, attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in dance, and was the dance writer for The Cincinnati Enquirer where she published previews, reviews, and interviews. At 27 she underwent a life-saving surgery. With the help of Pilates, she started dancing again, performing in musical theatre, dancing for six years with New York’s Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and appearing as guest artist in various small companies east of the Mississippi. She moved to Portland, Oregon in 1998 where she opened her therapeutically-oriented Pilates studio, Equipoise Enlightened Exercise. She taught at Oregon Ballet Theatre from 1998-2006, as well as at Portland Festival Ballet. Lavinia helped Nike set up their Pilates program and has also guest taught at Ballet Philippines. She is an Adjunct Professor of Dance at Portland State University where she is also pursuing a Master’s degree in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling. Lavinia’s teaching is informed by her own experiences with resilience from illness and injury, as well as her passion for anatomy, kinesiology, music, and somatics.
