dare to MOVE more — a creative residency for professional dancers

MOVE: JUL 6-16 / 2021

NW Dance Project’s created a new and accessible residency designed for professional dancers seeking to immerse themselves in creative processes with leading international contemporary choreographers and other dance artists, teachers, and mentors.

We understand how challenging this past year has been for so many artists. MOVE is conceived as a way to help professional dancers get back moving in an open and safe studio, connect with other dancers and artists, be inspired, and activate their artistic and physical practices in a spacious and stimulating environment.

NW Dance Project is committed to offering an open, supportive, and encouraging environment so that all dancers can develop and discover their unique creative voice. Dancers will work closely with NW Dance Project artistic staff, including Artistic Director Sarah Slipper, as well as our extraordinary guest artists as they are mentored to push and develop their abilities, curiosity, creativity, versatility, and capabilities.

Each day begins with a professional-level technique class before transitioning into research workshops and choreographic development sessions with two of our Pretty Creatives International Choreographic Competition winners, Joseph Hernandez and Yoshito Sakuraba.

We plan to hold MOVE as an in-person project only. Participation will be very limited so we can maintain all health and safety protocols issued by the Oregon Health Authority and the Center for Disease Control.

There is no cost to participate. Acceptance to the two-week project is through a two-step audition process.

As we are not holding live auditions this year, this project can serve as an audition process for open NW Dance Project company positions. Dancers will need to attend entire project to be considered.

Dancers must be 22+ by MAR 31 / 2021. No exceptions will be made. We are looking for artists who have begun their careers (minimum 2+ years of professional experience). Successful applicants will demonstrate advanced ballet and contemporary techniques; be versatile and movement-oriented; be open to artistic direction and suggestion; and be explorative, curious, fearless, and highly professional.

Participation in MOVE is highly selective and limited in order to provide each dancer the opportunity to work directly and intimately with NW Dance Project and our guest artists and to comply with all COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. We love to really see dancers. With the pandemic currently preventing live auditions, MOVE can serve as an audition for NW Dance Project company positions. To be considered for company spots, dancers must legally eligible to work in the USA.

Dancers will be accepted into MOVE through a two-step virtual audition process.

To be considered, dancers will need to create an account and apply via our online platform (please note: there is a one-time $15 application software fee).
In addition to completing the online application form, dancers will need to upload/provide the following materials to the site:
– résumé (or CV)
– full body dance photo
– headshot
– online link to video (Vimeo preferred) of dancing contemporary work (maximum 5 minutes). Solo work is best. If sending group work, please indicate who to watch for.
– online link to video (Vimeo preferred) showing improvisation in silence (maximum 2 minutes).
